How to unfollow with Relationship Guard and Safe List
Unfollow is a queue you review, not a blind sweep. Mutual followers, protected contacts and recent follows never reach it.
What this helps you do
Unfollowing is the part of account growth people put off, because the obvious way to do it — working down a follower list by hand — is slow, boring and easy to get wrong. Removals also carry a relationship cost: the person you cut today is the person you may want to talk to next month.
Ins Autopilot runs Unfollow as a queue you review rather than a blind sweep. Mutual followers stay. Contacts on your Safe List stay. People you have actually talked to stay. Anyone you followed very recently stays too. You read the queue, you confirm it, and the Recent log says what really happened.
What this is not
This is not a tool for stripping out everyone who has not followed back within a fixed number of hours. The guards below exist precisely to take that blunt behavior out of the default path.
Ins Autopilot does not undo a removal, does not re-follow anyone on your behalf, and does not promise that staying under the daily cap keeps your account safe. What it does is put the decision in front of you before it happens.
If you have used tools that clean your following list down to a target number overnight, that is a different approach. Here the run only ever works through a queue you approved.
Before you start
- You are signed in to Instagram in the same browser, and the extension shows your account ID in the footer.
- You have run a Follow session or otherwise accumulated contacts, so there is a list worth cleaning up.
- Unfollow shares the Follow / Unfollow / Likes daily allowance: 10 per day on Free, 200 per day on Monthly Pro, 250 per day on Annual.
- You have looked at your Safe List and added anyone whose follow you want to keep no matter what the counters say.
- You read the queue before confirming it. Nothing is removed before that point.
What the guards do
Four rules decide whether a contact ever reaches the removal queue.
- Skip mutual followers — if the account follows you back, it is left completely alone. Unfollow is aimed at the people who never returned the follow.
- Safe List — accounts you place here are never queued for removal. This is the place for clients, friends, collaborators and anyone whose follow you want to keep regardless of what any counter suggests.
- Relationship Guard — contacts with message history, or who have replied to you, are protected. A conversation is a stronger signal than a follow, so the guard stops a cleanup pass from quietly erasing one.
- Follow-time grace period — anyone you followed within the last N days is skipped. A follow that has not had time to be returned yet is not a failed follow.
The Safe List is the only one of the four that is entirely under your control. Add the people you care about before you start a run, not after.
What the guards do not guarantee
The guards lower the chance of removing someone you wanted to keep. They do not make unfollowing risk-free. Instagram applies its own limits, and it can react to a pattern of removals no matter how conservative your settings look on this screen.
Risk depends on your account's state and on the platform's current limits, which are not published and do change. Treat the daily allowance as a product ceiling rather than a safe number, keep your own removals modest, and stop the run if Instagram starts refusing actions.
A guard changes your behavior, not the platform's. Fewer removals are the only lever that genuinely reduces exposure.
Step by step
- Open the Unfollow tab — the header shows how much of today's Unfollow allowance is still available.
- Set the guards — leave Skip mutual followers and the follow-time grace period on, choose how many days the grace period covers, and review your Safe List before building anything.
- Build the queue — the extension compares the accounts you follow against every guard and proposes only the rows that survive all of them. Protected contacts never enter the list at all.
- Review the queue by hand — read the handles. If you want to keep somebody, add them to the Safe List rather than just deleting the row, so the decision holds for future runs too.
- Confirm and press Start — nothing is removed before this point. The run then works through the confirmed queue with a delay between actions.
- Watch the Recent log — each entry says what happened to that account — removed, skipped by a guard, or skipped because the daily allowance ran out. When the allowance is spent the run stops and continues after the next daily refresh.
Limits and important behavior
- Daily Unfollow allowance: 10 (Free), 200 (Monthly Pro), 250 (Annual). Allowances refresh daily.
- Unfollow is part of the Follow / Unfollow / Likes allowance and is available on every plan, including Free.
- Guards are evaluated when the queue is built. Adding someone to the Safe List later protects future runs; it does not bring back a contact who was already removed.
- A removal cannot be reversed from the extension. Following somebody again is something you do yourself in Instagram.
- Free binds 1 Instagram account; Pro raises that to 3.
Confirm the queue you can actually see. A removal is a real action on your account, and the extension cannot undo it.
Troubleshooting
- Someone I wanted to keep was queued.
- Add them to the Safe List before you confirm. If they were already removed, the extension cannot reverse it — follow them again from Instagram.
- The queue is much smaller than I expected.
- That is usually the guards working. Mutual followers, Safe List entries, contacts with message history or replies, and everyone inside the grace period are all excluded before you see the list.
- The run stopped partway through.
- The daily Unfollow allowance is spent. The run continues after the allowance refreshes, and the Recent log still shows everything that happened up to that point.
- Instagram started refusing actions.
- Stop the run. Refusals mean the platform is applying its own limits, and pushing through adds pressure instead of progress. Nothing in the extension is designed to work around a refusal.
