Instagram pinned posts: how many you can pin (2026)
Instagram pinned posts are the few posts of your own that the platform holds at the top of your profile grid instead of letting them sink with the timeline. The documented number is three, the control is labelled Pin to main grid, and unpinning returns the post to where it was rather than deleting it.

Instagram pinned posts: what the feature actually does
Answer first: a pinned post stays a normal post. Its likes, comments, caption and publication date are unchanged. Pinning only changes which tiles a visitor meets first when they open your profile.
“You can pin up to 3 posts you share on Instagram to the top of your profile.”
Instagram Help Center, Pin a post to the top of your profile on Instagram
Two implications follow. The post has to be yours, because the article only describes pinning posts you shared. And the pin is a state rather than an event: it holds until you remove it, unlike a story that expires on its own.
How many posts can you pin on Instagram?
Three. That is the entire limit, and it appears in the first sentence of the official instructions rather than in fine print. The same page adds that pinned posts can be removed from the top of your profile at any time, so the three slots are reusable indefinitely.
The question that keeps circulating is whether six is possible. As of October 2026 the platform documents three, and no help article describes an account type, follower threshold or regional variant with a larger allowance. What looks like extra pins may be story highlights in the row above the grid, a different surface.
How to pin a post on Instagram
Answer first: open your profile, tap the post, tap Options in the top right, then tap Pin to main grid. Instagram documents this as a mobile procedure with Android, iPhone and iPad variants, and it needs no third-party app.
- Tap your profile picture, then open the post you want to hold.
- Tap the Options menu in the top right corner of the post.
- Choose Pin to main grid. The tile moves to the top of your profile.
If the option is missing, check ownership first: the article covers posts you shared, and a post you were tagged in uses a different control described below. Instagram publishes no separate desktop walkthrough on that page.
What order do pinned posts appear in?
Instagram does not say. The article explains how to pin and how to unpin, and it publishes no rule for how three pinned posts are ordered among themselves. We mark this unverified for that reason: no one outside Instagram can state the order with confidence.
The nearest documented statement concerns another surface.
“They appear in reverse chronological order by default unless you reorder your grid.”
Instagram Help Center, Add tagged posts to your Instagram profile grid
Unrecorded is not the same as untrue: a rule that no help page states cannot be presented as confirmed.
Does pinning a post change your reach?
No documented effect. Instagram's article describes position on your profile and says nothing about feed ranking, explore distribution or how many accounts see the post. Claims that a pin boosts reach are not supported by the page that defines the feature.
What a pin changes is observable without a ranking claim: the first tiles a visitor sees. On an account that receives profile visits from outbound activity, that ordering decides whether a stranger reads your best explanation of what you do or scrolls past a photo from eleven months ago.
Pinning is a profile setting and is not among the behaviours the platform's rules on automation address; the follow, like and message volume that sends people to your profile is. Those budgets are covered in our guide to safe automation workflows, and the pin is decoration on that work, not a substitute for it.
Pin to main grid is not the same as Add to grid
Two controls, similar wording, different jobs, and confusing them is the usual source of doubt about the limit. Pin to main grid acts on a post you published. Add to grid acts on a post you were tagged in, and it carries a notification the pin route does not.
“The post owner receives a notification that you moved their post to your main grid.”
Instagram Help Center, Add tagged posts to your Instagram profile grid
The difference matters when counting slots: a tagged post placed on your grid is part of the grid rather than the pinned shelf.
Pinned posts and story highlights are different shelves
Highlights sit in a row above the grid and hold stories that would otherwise have expired. Pins sit inside the grid and hold posts that already live there. One is a container, the other a position marker.
The two surfaces compete for attention without competing for a limit: you can keep several highlights and three pins at once. Our guide to story highlights covers the container side.
How to unpin a post
Same menu, opposite label: tap the post, tap Options, then tap Unpin from main grid. The post is not deleted and does not move to your archive, which is the reassurance most people want before touching the setting.
“When you unpin a post, the post will return to its original spot in your profile grid.”
Instagram Help Center, Pin a post to the top of your profile on Instagram
That sentence separates unpinning from what people confuse it with: taking a post off the profile entirely is archiving.
Two different pins: posts and chats
Instagram uses the same word for a second feature, and the two allowances are counted separately. Three posts can be pinned to a profile while three conversations are pinned to an inbox, and neither reduces the other.
“You can pin up to 3 chats to the top of your inbox on Instagram for quick access to your conversations.”
Instagram Help Center, Pin a chat to the top of your inbox on Instagram
One asymmetry is worth knowing: the chat version is documented for personal accounts only, while the post version carries no such restriction.
Choosing the three slots
The recommendation below is ours, not Instagram's. Treat the three pins as three jobs rather than three favourites: one post that proves the work, one that states the offer plainly, and one that gives a new visitor somewhere to start.
Then apply a rotation habit. Because a pin can be moved at any time, the shelf is cheap to maintain: review it monthly and swap a slot when a post stops matching what you sell. Accounts running outbound campaigns should align the shelf with whoever the campaign reaches, which is the question covered in audience targeting and, for service accounts, in finding clients on Instagram.

Frequently asked questions
How many posts can you pin on Instagram?
Three, and the limit applies to posts you published yourself. Instagram states the number in the first sentence of its pinning article and adds that pinned posts can be removed at any time, so the same three slots can be reused as often as you like.
Can you pin six posts on Instagram?
No. As of October 2026 Instagram documents a maximum of three, and no help article describes an account type or region with a larger allowance. Profiles that look like they hold more are usually showing story highlights in the row above the grid, or tagged posts added by a different control.
Does pinning a post affect the Instagram algorithm?
Instagram documents no effect. The pinning article describes where a post sits on your profile and says nothing about feed ranking or explore distribution. Pinning changes what a visitor sees first, which can change what they do next, but that is a consequence of ordering rather than a documented ranking change.
What order do pinned posts appear in?
Instagram does not publish a rule for the order of the pinned shelf, so we cannot state one as confirmed. Newest-first is widely assumed and may be right, but the help centre never says it. Test it on your own profile, and treat any guide that states an order plainly as inferring.
Does unpinning a post delete it or archive it?
Neither. Instagram states that unpinning returns the post to its original spot in your profile grid, so the post keeps its date, likes and comments. If you want the post off the profile entirely, that is the archive control, a separate action with a separate label in the same menu.
