How to archive Instagram posts (2026)
Archiving is the middle setting between leaving a post up and deleting it. Learning how to archive Instagram posts is four taps in the app, and the payoff is unusual for the platform: the post leaves your profile and becomes invisible to your followers, but Instagram states that it keeps all its likes and comments, and that you can undo the whole thing at any time. Here is the documented path, the bulk path, and where archiving stops.

How to archive Instagram posts: the four-tap path
Answer first: open your profile, open the post, tap Options, choose Archive. Instagram documents it in four steps and notes the feature is not available on computers, so this is an app-only job.
“You can archive a post you've shared to hide it from your profile and make it so your followers and other people on Instagram can't see it. When you archive a post, it keeps all its likes and comments.”
Instagram Help Center, Archive a post you've shared on Instagram
That single sentence settles two questions that dominate search results. The post stops appearing on your profile, and it stops being visible to other people, without being destroyed. Everything the post accumulated stays attached to it.
How to unarchive a post
Reversibility is the other half of the feature, and Instagram documents it in plain language rather than leaving it to inference.
“You can undo archiving a post at any time to see it again in your profile.”

The route back is longer than the route in, and it is worth knowing before you archive anything at scale. Instagram's steps run: profile, then Menu, then Archive under the section on how you use Instagram, then choose Posts archive at the top, then tap the post, then Options, then Show on profile to confirm. Because the restored post returns to the position in your grid that it originally occupied, an un-archived post does not jump to the front of your profile.
Archive vs delete vs save
These three are constantly confused, and the differences decide whether the action can be undone.
Archive applies to a post you published yourself. It is reversible, and the engagement survives. Delete applies to the same post, is permanent, and takes the likes and comments with it. Save is not about your content at all: it is how you bookmark somebody else's post into a private collection, which we cover separately in our guide to Instagram saved posts. The simplest way to hold the distinction is: you archive what you made, you save what others made.
Where archived posts live, and how to archive many at once
Archived content does not disappear into nowhere. Instagram keeps it under your activity, inside a section headed Removed and archived content, and the archive itself is split into three shelves: Stories archive, Posts archive and Live archive.
When you are clearing a backlog, tapping through posts one at a time is slow, and Instagram documents a bulk route. From your profile, open the menu, go to Your activity, then Content you shared, then Posts, then tap Select and pick the posts you want. A filter lets you sort newest to oldest or restrict the selection to a specific date range before you confirm. This is the fastest documented way to archive a batch, and unlike deleting it is safe to do in volume because every item can be restored.
Stories archive is a separate switch
Posts and stories archive differently, and the difference catches people out. Stories are saved to the Stories Archive automatically, which means a story you published months ago may still be sitting there without you ever taking an action. That automatic saving can be turned off in settings, and stories can also be archived early rather than waiting for the 24-hour window to close.
One privacy detail is documented on the stories side and is easy to miss. The archive is private by default, and the only way content leaves it is if you decide to put it back.
“Your memories and archived stories can't be seen on Instagram unless you choose to share them.”
Instagram Help Center, Archive Instagram Stories or turn off Stories Archive
The same note also carries a disclosure that the posts side does not: archived stories you shared publicly will be used to improve AI at Meta unless you delete them or change your account to private. No equivalent statement appears for posts, so treating the two archives as the same object is a mistake.
What archiving does not do
- It does not free up your username or your grid slot. The restored post returns to where it was, which is the point of the feature.
- It does not reach the people who already saw it. Anything screenshotted, shared or cached elsewhere is outside the platform's control, and Instagram does not suggest otherwise.
- It is not a moderation tool. If the problem is another account rather than your own content, archiving changes nothing; our notes on removing a follower without blocking cover that case.
None of this is an action the platform counts against a limit, because archiving changes visibility rather than activity. The quotas and temporary restrictions that matter for automated accounts apply to following, unfollowing, liking, commenting and messaging; our paced automation workflow sets out how those budgets behave, and what to do when a block has already landed if the rules have already caught up with you.

Frequently asked questions
How do I archive an Instagram post?
Open the app, go to your profile, tap the post you want to hide, tap Options in the top right, then select Archive. Instagram notes the feature is not available on computers. The post leaves your profile immediately, and the platform states it keeps all its likes and comments, so nothing is lost.
Can someone see an archived post on Instagram?
No. Instagram states that archiving hides a post from your profile and makes it so your followers and other people on Instagram cannot see it. The archive itself is private to you. The one caveat the platform does not address is the old direct link to the post, so treat that as undocumented.
Do archived posts lose their likes and comments?
They do not. Instagram states that when you archive a post it keeps all its likes and comments, which is the clearest difference between archiving and deleting. If you later restore the post, it returns to the position it originally held on your profile grid, carrying the same engagement it had before you archived it.
What is the difference between archiving and deleting a post?
Deleting is permanent and destroys the post along with its likes and comments. Archiving hides the post from everyone else while keeping the engagement, and Instagram states it can be reversed at any time. If you are unsure whether you want a post gone, archive it first; deleting is the one you cannot walk back.
Can I archive several Instagram posts at once?
Yes. From your profile, open the menu, then Your activity, then Posts under Content you shared. Tap Select, choose the posts you want, and use the date filter to narrow the selection before confirming. Instagram documents this bulk path, and because archiving is reversible it is far safer to do in volume than bulk deleting, which has no undo.
