How to remove a follower on Instagram without blocking (2026)
Almost every guide to how to remove a follower on Instagram gives the same three taps and stops. Instagram documents something narrower: the per-follower Remove button is described for private accounts, and public accounts get a path that only works on accounts Instagram has flagged. Both share one reassurance: the person is not notified. Here is what each removal actually does, and what nobody can tell you for certain.

How to remove a follower on Instagram
On a private account, the path is Profile, then Followers, then Remove beside the account you want out, then Remove again to confirm. Instagram's article on removing a follower opens with a condition, and the condition is the part most guides drop: it says that if your account is set to private, you can remove people from your followers list.
That is not a formatting quirk. It is the difference between an account owner choosing who stays, which is what privacy implies, and a public account trying to curate an audience that has freely opted in. If your account is public and you cannot find the Remove control, you are probably not looking at a bug.
“When you remove a follower, they aren't notified that you've removed them.”

Can you remove a follower without blocking them?
On a private account, yes, and that is the designed path. Blocking is the heavier instrument, and Instagram treats it as a separate feature with separate consequences. It notes that you can also block someone to get them to stop following you, and that people are not notified when you block them either. So both routes accomplish the removal, and the choice is about everything else that comes with a block.
Everything else is substantial. Instagram documents that after you block someone, their likes and comments are removed from your photos and videos, and that unblocking will not restore them. The blocked person also cannot mention or tag you. If your only goal was to take one account off your follower list, a block spends far more than that.
Why can't I remove a follower on Instagram?
Three documented situations explain it. Your account may be set to public, where the per-follower control is not the documented path and the audience itself is opt-in. The account may not be one Instagram has flagged, because the public-account route only appears when Instagram has flagged followers as potentially spam, bots or irrelevant. Or the follower may not be in the list you are looking at, since the flagged route surfaces through a notification in the Followers screen rather than through the account row.
On a public account, the documented removal is the flagged-followers flow: open your profile, tap Followers, tap the Flagged for review notification if Instagram has raised one, then either Remove all or Remove next to individual accounts. Instagram notes that this feature is automatically available for any account set to public, and that a flagged follower can be marked Not spam or irrelevant if the flag was wrong.
“Once these flagged followers have been removed, they'll also be removed from your follower count and follower list. They won't be notified that they've been removed from your followers.”

Does Instagram tell someone you removed them?
No. Instagram states it twice, for both removal paths: the private-account Remove action and the flagged-follower removal both leave the person uninformed. This is the one thing every guide gets right.
What the platform does not promise is invisibility. Removal is not the same as blocking, so the person can still see your profile, your posts and your stories, and can follow you again unless something else stops them. If they are watching their own follower list closely, the absence of a notification is not the same as the absence of a signal.
The block-and-unblock trick, honestly
This is the most repeated advice on the internet for removing a follower from a public account, and it is only half documented. The documented half is real: Instagram says you can block someone to get them to stop following you, and that they are not notified. So blocking does remove them from your followers.
The undocumented half is what happens next. Instagram does not publish what unblocking does to the follow relationship, or whether the account can immediately follow again. Treat every confident answer as community-reported, because nobody has a primary source. The documented cost is the part the trick leaves out: their likes and comments are removed and do not come back when you unblock. That is a permanent price for a temporary fix.
Will a removed follower just follow you again?
Usually yes. There is no documented setting that permanently prevents a specific account from following you, so removal is housekeeping rather than a barrier. The durable options are narrower than people expect: stay private so following requires approval, or block, which is a much heavier commitment.
One more limit matters before you plan a cleanup. Instagram warns that a temporary limit, including approving follow requests, may be placed on your account if you switch between public and private too often. So flipping to private to tidy your follower list, then back, is itself a behaviour the platform watches. These rules change without notice, and the general shape of them is the same one that governs paced following: routine and low volume look like a person, spikes look like a script. Our paced workflow covers the model, and safe mass unfollow covers the mirror image of this problem.

Removing a follower versus cleaning up your own following
These are opposite operations, and mixing them up is how accounts get hurt. Removing a follower changes who can see you; unfollowing changes who you see, and it is the action with published ceilings that most often ends in an action block. If you want a tidier audience, the first is the relevant one. If you want to stop following accounts that never engaged, see identifying and removing ghost followers.
Frequently asked questions
Can you remove a follower on Instagram without blocking them?
On a private account, yes: Profile, then Followers, then Remove beside the account, then Remove to confirm. Instagram documents that path for accounts set to private. On a public account the documented route is the flagged-followers flow in the Followers screen, which only covers accounts Instagram has flagged as spam, bots or irrelevant.
Does Instagram notify someone when you remove them as a follower?
No. Instagram states that when you remove a follower they are not notified, and it repeats the reassurance for the flagged-follower removal path as well. The person can still see your profile and posts, and can follow you again, unless you take a heavier step such as blocking the account.
Why can't I find the Remove button next to my followers?
Most likely because your account is set to public. Instagram frames the per-follower Remove control as something you can use if your account is private. Public accounts instead get the Flagged for review notification in the Followers screen, and that only appears when Instagram has flagged at least one follower as potential spam or a bot.
Does blocking someone remove them from my followers?
Yes. Instagram says you can block someone to get them to stop following you, and that people are not notified when you block them. The cost is documented too: their likes and comments are removed from your posts, and unblocking will not restore them. That makes a block a permanent trade, not a round trip.
Will they know I removed them if they check their follower list?
There is no notification, but there is also no invisibility. Instagram does not claim the removal is hidden from the person's account, and removal is not blocking, so they keep full access to your profile. If they monitor who follows them, a missing name is itself the signal.
